Skaters are given the opportunity to learn forward and defense positions while goalies are given goaltending instruction, with plenty of practice time. What to Expect

Lead by the MTU Strength & Conditioning staff, athletes will learn and develop proper training techniques in order to improve overall fitness, increase performance potential, and decrease the risk of injury. Formerly known as Eisenhower Dance Detroit, the company enters this new chapter with a renewed identity rooted in legacy and propelled by its evolving identity. This bold program reflects the power of movement to mark change, challenge perspective, and carry us forward. Featuring works by Stephanie Pizzo, Yoshito Sakuraba, and more, SHIFT brings together a range of choreographic voices that illuminate the company’s athleticism, emotional depth, and contemporary edge. From Pizzo’s bold, visceral movement language to Sakuraba’s evocative Ongaeshi: A Debt of Feathers, the program honors where the company has been while revealing where it is headed.

In celebration of "American 250", The Akropolis Reed Quintet, join forces with composer and jazz pianist Pascal Le Boeuf, and jazz drummer Christian Euman to perform their recent Grammy-winning album, Are We Dreaming the Same Dream?, exploring the unity within the American experience. The music is an examination of what Ralph Ellison calls “the unity of American experience” and draws upon a selection of our collective musical “ancestors” — Geri Allen, Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, and Leonard Bernstein — each of whom have historically represented a variety of perspectives concerning the unity of American experience. Following this chain of artistic ancestry leads to Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams, Aaron Copland, and beyond.

This performance is a musical exploration of American identity, tracing a lineage of influential artists to examine how diverse perspectives come together into a shared cultural experience.

About the Performers

Akropolis Reed Quintet

Founded in 2009, the GRAMMY® Award-winning Akropolis Reed Quintet performs with “sheer musical imagination” (Gramophone), renowned as “a sonically daring ensemble who specializes in performing new works with charisma and integrity” (BBC Music Magazine). Composed of the same five members since its founding, these five reed players and entrepreneurs are pioneers and champions of a new genre of classical music—the reed quintet. Christian Euman

Christian Euman, one of Revive Magazine's "six drummers you should know about," has toured with Jacob Collier, Kurt Elling, Billy Childs, Walter Smith III, and Geoff Keezer, among others. He attended the Thelonious Monk Institute where he studied and performed with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chris Potter, Jimmy Heath, and Stefon Harris.

Pascal Le Boeuf

Described as “a composer that rocks” by the New York Times, Pascal Le Boeuf is a GRAMMY-award-winning composer, pianist, and producer whose works range from improvised music to hybridizing chamber music with production-based technology. Pascal is an Assistant Professor of Music at MIT and holds a PhD from Princeton University.

About the Presenter

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts cultivates a vibrant and connected community through experiences that bring the Keweenaw together. Located on Michigan Technological University's campus in Houghton, Michigan, the 80,000-square-foot arts center's design is inspired by the inclined look of the local copper mine hoists and shaft houses inside and out. Event spaces include the Rozsa Lobby, James and Margaret Black Performance Hall, Rozsa Backstage, Rozsa Art Galleries, and McArdle Theatre.

Volunteer projects will vary based on the needs of local agencies and community members. Painting, weeding, planting, digging, raking, cleaning, organizing, and moving are all likely projects that we have seen in the past.

Register as a volunteer through our community service website, GivePulse, starting Tuesday, September 8th at 8:00 AM. Registration will close on Sunday, October 11th at 11:59 PM.

Check-in will occur from 8:30 - 9:00 AM in the Commons on the ground floor of the MUB for all registrants. Information packets will be distributed and from there, groups will travel to their assigned service locations. Projects may require that groups drive to their location.

About the Performers

Around 2004, singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell was a twenty-something Middlebury College graduate when the melody of “Wait for Me” came to her while driving between performance gigs. She connected the lyrics to the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, a favorite of hers as a child. The story deepened as she put Orpheus, the young and creative optimist, against Hades, the King of the Underworld, who had a true love of his own in Persephone, the Goddess of springtime, flowers, and vegetation.

In collaboration with orchestrator/arranger Michael Chorney and original director/designer Ben t. Matchstick, Hadestown made its premiere as a small performance piece in 2006 at the Old Labor Hall in Barre, Vermont. From 2006 to 2007, Mitchell performed the show with a group of actors at a number of small venues throughout Vermont and Massachusetts before turning it into a concept album in 2010. The album earned international acclaim, which prompted a concert tour to some 60 cities across North America and the U.K. through 2012.

Along the way, Mitchell’s agent sent a copy of the album to producer Dale Franzen who caught a performance of Hadestown at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California. Franzen immediately saw the potential and began further development at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, also bringing producer Mara Isaacs into the fold.

In 2012, Mitchell saw the Ars Nova production of Dave Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which transferred to Broadway in 2016. Mitchell felt an immediate connection with the show’s director, Rachel Chavkin, and the two began collaboration on Hadestown, which premiered its fully staged production at New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) in the summer of 2016. It was during the NYTW run when the show set its sights towards Broadway.

Hadestown played two additional pre-Broadway engagements at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton (Canada) and the National Theatre in London. It began previews on Broadway on March 22, 2019, and opened April 17, 2019, at the Walter Kerr Theatre where it remains today. The Broadway production earned eight Tony® Awards including Best Musical, the Grammy Award® for Best Musical Theater Album, six Outer Critics Circle Awards including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, four Drama Desk Awards, and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway Musical.

Two-time Grammy Award–winning, genre-blending, Terrance Simien brings more than 40 years of powerful, high-energy performances rooted in Black American zydeco music traditions. A seventh-generation multicultural Louisiana Creole, Simien fuses infectious rhythms, soulful vocals, and deep cultural storytelling into shows that move audiences across generations and borders.

Simien has music placed in TV shows and product advertisements as well as multiple theatrically released films including The Big Easy. He and his band were the first zydeco band ever seen on the big screen. In 2009 Simien contributed music to a classic animated Disney film, The Princess & The Frog that introduced millions, many for the first time, to zydeco music. Simien also has music on the new Disney ride based on the film, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure that opened at both US theme parks in 2024.

He's also has shared studio, stage and toured with Los Lobos, Art Neville, the meters, Robert Palmer, Dave Matthews Band, Dr. John, Marcia Ball, David Hidalgo, Randy Newman and Stevie Wonder once joined the band on stage to play harmonica!

In 2001, Simien created Creole for Kidz and the History of Zydeco, the only educational program of its kind for student, youth, and family audiences. Since then, it has reached more than 250,000 K–12 students and families, using music, storytelling, and hands-on activities to raise cultural awareness while making learning fun.

Join LA’s premiere up-and-coming Asian American a cappella group, Filosophy, for an enchanted evening of holiday hits the whole family will enjoy! Singing along is encouraged as they perform intricate a cappella arrangements of your favorite seasonal songs. Filosophy's name comes from the fact that all the performers are of Filipino heritage. Filosophy is composed of over 20 artists in rotation whose goal is to further promote Asian representation through live performance. About the Performers

LA’s premiere up-and-coming Asian American a cappella group. Bringing talent from all over the country, FILOSOPHY is composed of over 20 artists unified in 5, whose goal is to further promote Asian representation through live performance. A passion project developed by Fil-Am a cappella sensations, The Filharmonic, FILOSOPHY blends hip hop, jazz, pop and R&B in its exciting and engaging arrangements.

FILOSOPHY has performed on cruise ships, college campuses across the nation, the Downtown Disney’s LIVE! stage, and featured on The Filharmonic’s EP, “Profiles.” Their rendition of “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus got over 6,000 views on Instagram, and their debut music video, “Go Tell It On The Mountain/Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” has amassed over 10,000 views on YouTube!

FILOSOPHY’s broad appeal enables them to entertain venues large and small, from corporate and private events, to festivals, casinos, and theme parks.

A comedian based in New York City, Ashley originally trained as a computer scientist before pursuing comedy full time. She's been featured on Netflix is a joke, Hulu, and Comedy Central, but is best known for her viral crowd work videos on TikTok and top charting podcast We're Having Gay Sex. She exploded onto the internet last year by showcasing her rare ability to authentically engage and improvise with guests on her podcast and audience members while on stage. About the Presenters

Late Night Programming is an initiative implemented by Student Leadership and Involvement with the help and support of many student organizations and student leaders. Entertainment is funded by the Student Activity Fee with additional support from co-sponsorships.

About the Performers

Created in 2007 by Yamoussa Bangoura, a guinean multidisciplinary artist who dreamt of founding a circus school and an international show production company. Installed in Montreal for several years, he transmits and shares his values and his passion through our organism, teaching circus, music and west-african dances in our studio while also offering a space for trainings to all.

Yamoussa realized his dream and opened his own company, Kalabanté Productions in Montreal Canada. He recruited many of his extended family members to join the company, including his twin sisters, brothers, and cousins.

The company began doing shows in Quebec, and over the years expanded to all of Canada, the USA and now performs all over the world. In 2018, Kalabante opened their own studio and school in Montreal, where they offer classes in African dance, cirque, and drumming.

Kalabante Productions is proud to be able to share their work, achievements and skills to inspire others and to assist with the humanitarian mission to help the Guinean community from which Yamoussa and many of his company members come.

The Rozsa Center is letting the dogs out! Puppy Pals LIVE is a family fun action-packed show where adopted and rescued dogs perform spectacular stunts and breathtaking feats. About the Performers

Puppy Pals originator Wesley Williams started it all based on his love for any and all animals! His passion dates back to his childhood days where his mom even said he wanted to purchase a full-on petting zoo at just five years old. It was always something new she proclaimed. One month all he wanted was a potbelly pig, the next month a miniature pony, the next month a flock of chickens, you name the animal, and Wesley wanted it.

Although he has always had a genuine joy for working with animals, Wesley pursued his unique unicycle skills at an early age, but always kept that dream of working with furry friends in the back of his mind and now Wesley has burst onto the scene with his “Puppy Pals,” a hit comedic stunt dog show!

About the Presenter

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts cultivates a vibrant and connected community through experiences that bring the Keweenaw together. Located on Michigan Technological University's campus in Houghton, Michigan, the 80,000-square-foot arts center's design is inspired by the inclined look of the local copper mine hoists and shaft houses inside and out. Event spaces include the Rozsa Lobby, James and Margaret Black Performance Hall, Rozsa Backstage, Rozsa Art Galleries, and McArdle Theatre.

As the largest theater in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Rozsa dramatically expands the region’s access to large-scale performing arts events including Broadway tours, ballet, cirque, music, and more.
