Nearly five hundred students in grades 9-12 in twenty classes from seven schools in Houghton, Baraga, Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties will flood MTU’s Great Lakes Research Center on Wednesday, October 25, from 8:45-11:30am and noon- 2:45 pm for the 6th Annual Lake Superior Water Festival. Students from the following schools will be participating: Houghton High School, Ironwood High School, L’Anse High School, Lake Linden-Hubbell High School, LL Wright High School, Ontonagon High School and Watersmeet High School.
Fifteen different sessions will be offered throughout the day, presented by Michigan Tech scientists, graduate students, and staff, as well as, Keweenaw Land Trust, U.S. Coast Guard, Ottawa National Forest, and NECi Superior Enzymes.
The Water Festival provides an opportunity for students to learn about and celebrate our most precious natural resource – the Great Lakes! A wide variety of topics from science and engineering to creative writing will be presented. Students attend four 35-minute activities. Some of the topics to be presented include Remotely-Operated- Vehicles, Leave No Trace Outdoors, cleaning wastewater, U.S. Coast Guard careers, Lake Sturgeon ecology, atmospheric research in a cloud chamber, and more.
The 2017 Water Festival is made possible with funding from Michigan Association of Environmental Professionals. The Festival is coordinated by the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative and Michigan Tech Center for Science and Environmental Outreach, and hosted by Michigan Tech's Great Lakes Research Center.
