DESCRIPTION:New directions and visions – A pathway to the new Future of Eng
 ineering\n\nME-EM Graduate Seminar Speaker Series\n\nproudly presents:\n\nD
 r. Sourav Banerjee\nUniversity of South Carolina\n\nAbstract: AcoustoUltras
onic wave propagates in a medium within a broad spectrum of frequencies (au
dible and beyond audible 1KHz – 400 MHz) when simultaneously coupled with t
he stresses. At Integrated Material Assessment and Predictive Simulation La
boratory (i-MAPS) we explore the physics of acoustic and ultrasonic wave pr
opagation while apply the physics for various applications from Structural
Health Monitoring (SHM)\, Nondestructive Evaluations (NDE)\, Energy Harvest
ing\, design of Metamaterials and Biomedical device to even characterizing
the Biological species like pathogens. In this talk primarily four research
areas will be briefly discussed to give an overview of the current researc
h activities around the work in the areas of Acoustics and Ultrasonics\, wh
ile specific activities performed by i-MAPS will be presented. 1) Under the
application of NDE\, an elegant modeling technique will be discussed to si
mulate virtual NDE experiments of composite materials. 2) Under the applica
tion of SHM\, quantification of precursor damage in composites will be disc
ussed which is considered to be the most challenging problem in SHM field.
 3) under the application of Energy Harvesting\, iMAPS patent pending multif
unctional AcoustoElastic MetaMaterials will be discussed which can simultan
eously be used as a sound barrier and an Energy Harvester. 4) Quantitative
Acoustic Contrast Tomography (Q-ACT) will be discussed which is patented by
iMAPS and is used for pathogen characterization. In conclusion visionary i
nterconnectivity between these fields and possible future applications will
be triggered to enflame the new generation students for scientific researc
h.\n\nBio: Dr. Banerjee is an Assistant Professor at the Mechanical Enginee
ring Department of the University of South Carolina since he joined in Janu
ary 2012. Before his academic career during his seven years of industry car
eer he was the Director of Product Development at the Acellent Technologies
Inc. where he worked with almost all aerospace organizations like Boeing\,
  Airbus\, Embraer\, Lockheed Martin\, EADS\, Bell Helicopter\, Augusta West
land\, Thales Alenia\, NASA\, AFOSR and many more. He was activity involved
with research with two patents during his industry career where he managed
more than $5M projects from various sources including government and indus
tries. Currently at USC as a PI and Co-PI he is managing more than $1.5M gr
 ants from various agencies including NASA\, Boeing\, ARL\, USDA\, NRCS\, Sk
oltech etc. Dr. Banerjee has published close to 40 journal articles and mor
e than 50 conference articles and three book chapters (two to be published)
in his research career. To mention his academic institutions\, Dr. Banerje
e was graduated from University of Arizona\, in 2005 with his PhD in Engine
ering Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. Before PhD he graduated from IIT B
ombay\, India with his M.Tech in Structural Engineering in the year 2002. B
efore M.Tech he graduated with B.S in Civil Engineering from Indian Institu
te of Engineering Science and technology (IIEST)\, Shibpoore\, India in the
year 2000. During his career he received numerous awards as a young resear
cher including most prestigious Achenbach Medal in the year 2010. He is a f
ormer DAAD scholar honored by German Academic Exchange Service.
