Abstract:
I will present an introduction to representation theory of finite groups, with a focus on the symmetric group. I will discuss how things are different working over the complex numbers versus a field of characteristic p. We will consider how the symmetric group theory relates to that of the general linear group of invertible matrices, where more geometric methods are available. Finally, I will discuss some recent breakthroughs and future directions for the field. The talk should be accessible to graduate students and advanced undergraduates in mathematics or statistics.
