BACKSTAGE JAZZ: JAZZ AS PROTEST MUSIC

Join the Jazz Lab Band and the R&D Big Band as they explore the history of jazz music, and it's role in social and political protest. Learn about the events that inspired the compositions, and hear music by jazz luminaries Charles Mingus, Billie Holiday, Max Roach, Nina Simone, Sonny Rollins, Duke Ellington, Dave Douglas and others. The backstage setting recreates a classic jazz club atmosphere. The bands are lead by Michigan Tech's new Director of Jazz Studies, Adam Meckler.
