This concert combines all of the best things. Michigan Tech Jazz playing big band covers of jams that have been sampled by hip-hop artists. A hip-hop artist performing the songs as they were sampled, along with select members of the Jazz Lab Band. An on-stage installation that responds to the performance, made by the innovative creative technologist Osman Koç.
Jazz Lab Band is an award-winning jazz band directed by Adam Meckler. The top jazz band at Michigan Tech is made up of 18 musicians from throughout the country, and features a broad repertoire of music ranging from the Big Band Era to today's contemporary big band Jazz, with a focus on modern and original compositions. Osman Koç is a creative technologist / artist. He uses creative coding, physical computing and digital fabrication as his production methods to create works that exist at the intersection of art, science and technology. He creates audio-visual performances, responsive, immersive environments and interactive installations by incorporating various sensors and display technologies. He develops custom software to visualize behaviors and movement patterns that are inspired by natural sciences. He uses various forms of interactivity and public participation to create playful and engaging experiences that encourage cooperation and exploration. The abstract nature of his visuals aim to be familiar enough to spark recognition and alien enough to leave room for interpretation.
