Presentation Title: The yin and yang of aquatic N cycling
Abstract: Despite the fundamental role of N fixation in the global N cycle, rates and ecological dynamics remain virtually unknown for the inland and coastal aquatic ecosystems (e.g., lakes, wetlands, rivers, estuaries) that connect terrestrial and marine biomes. This is due to the traditional paradigms that primary producers were limited by phosphorus availability, and that N fixation rates were low to nonexistent, and therefore not important, in these ecosystems. For the past 5 years, our lab has worked to comprehensively study N fixation relative to denitrification in streams and rivers across ecoregions in the USA, applying biogeochemical and microbial approaches to challenge these paradigms. This seminar will provide an overview of the diverse research and education activities that have comprised this project, and an updated synthesis of findings. Ultimately, our research is contributing a sophisticated understanding of the spatial and temporal complexity in N cycling rates, and insight into the habitat and landscape scale drivers that allow N fixation and denitrification to co-exist across aquatic landscapes.
