Presentation Title: Instructive Biomaterials: Promoting tissue regeneration and implantable device biocompatibility using engineering principles
Abstract: The minimally invasive nature of injectable hydrogels has made them a common therapeutic approach for wound repair and as regenerative supports for tissue engineering applications. This presentation will give an overview of efforts in our laboratory to develop novel injectable composite hydrogels that could serve as physical wound healing supports and vehicles to deliver therapeutic factors. These materials have application in ligament, tendon, and cutaneous injury repair. We are also developing these material systems for use as integrative tissue adhesives that can reliably gel under the relatively harsh environmental conditions associated with marine mammals. These materials have the potential application to help stabilize satellite telemetry tags used to assess conservation threats to marine mammals. Our long-term overarching goal is the development of translatable therapeutic and regenerative strategies to address wound healing.
