Presentation Title: Cyanobacteria of Lake Superior: New blooms or old news?
Abstract: Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (cHABs) are increasing in frequency, duration, and severity in freshwater ecosystems. The lower Laurentian Great Lakes are prone to toxin producing cHABs. However, Lake Superior has not seen regular cHAB occurrences, likely due to its cold temperature and oligotrophic nature. During a Dolichospermum bloom in 2018, opportunistic samples were taken from the off-shore bloom and investigated with shotgun metagenomics. In this seminar I will discuss how we were able to recover a near-complete Dolichospermum genome from the bloom, the metabolic capabilities of the organism, and the global distribution of this organism.
You will first enter a waiting room and then the host will invite you in.
