Presentation Title: My Sabbatical in Singapore: How I Finally Got to Study Butterflies
Abstract: Dr. Thomas Werner is a Drosophila ("fruit fly") expert, but butterflies were his childhood passion and the reason for him to become a professor. While he never pulled it off to study butterflies in his own lab, he spent his sabbatical year at the National University of Singapore (2019-2020) to work in Antonia Monteiro’s lab to study butterfly genetics. While this talk provides insights (and many nice photos) about how butterflies are reared and manipulated under laboratory conditions, another important part of the talk is why and how it is beneficial to step away from your own research and see the world from a different perspective. This talk will be equally valuable to students and professors, as there are lessons to be learned that apply to a wide academic audience.
You will first enter a waiting room and then the host will invite you in.
