Inspiration from Nature to Improve Human Health and Performance

Four out of five US adults do not get the recommended amount of weekly physical activity. Reduced physical activity is a major public health concern as it increases risks for many chronic diseases and mortality. To better understand skeletal muscle function this presentation will use a comparative approach to consider how birds, fish, and mammals move. These lessons from nature will be linked to our use of novel exercise equipment and interventions to improve human health and athletic performance. Examples of how comparative exercise physiology is used in our teaching and community outreach events will also be presented.

Bio: Dr. Elmer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology at Michigan Technological University. His goals are to find better ways to restore musculoskeletal function, maintain health, and improve performance in healthy and clinical populations. Specifically, his research is focused on: 1) mechanics of skeletal muscle contraction, 2) coordination of locomotor tasks, and 3) exercise interventions to improve physical conditioning. His research and teaching have been supported by the National Science Foundation, American College of Sports Medicine, and Physiological Society. Applications for his research range from basic aspects of muscular function to applied human performance in settings including injury, rehabilitation, and sport.
