Laura Kasson Fiss presents the January 2023 release of her book, The Idler’s Club: Humour and Mass Readership from Jerome K. Jerome to P.G. Wodehouse. The book analyzes the well-known and lesser-known Victorian authors of the Idler periodical and its circle, arguing that making fun of Victorian social clubs became a way of redefining belonging. The presentation will include the story of researching figures Jerome K. Jerome, Robert Barr, J.M. Barrie, Arthur Conan Doyle, Barry Pain, Israel Zangwill, and P.G. Wodehouse, the fictional clubs that they created, and the readers who perhaps could never enter an actual Victorian club. Following will be time for questions, a discussion of the writing process, and a chance to celebrate with lemonade and cake provided by the Department of Humanities and Pavlis Honors College.
