O’Hare Modernization Program: A Retrospective Look at Keeping the Busiest Airport Operating
Abstract:
The demand for air travel is ever growing, and existing infrastructure must adapt to efficiently and safely move passengers to their destinations. Over 16 years O’Hare International Airport performed the monumental task of revamping a majority of the airfield. Starting in 2005, only two of the 6 existing runways remain unaltered when the O’Hare Modernization Program was finalized in 2021. This presentation will detail and take a retrospective look at how one of the busiest airports in the country was able to continue operating while under construction. What analysis was used to determine the optimal runway configuration, and how fast time simulation was used to determine environmental impacts and how to efficiently operate the airfield.
