Abstract

Soft materials are, in general, challenging to characterize due to a confluence of practical experimental limitations including natural sample-to-sample variability and our abilities to grip and peer inside them. True biological tissues and biological materials are especially difficult due to limitations in applying contrast agents or fiducial markers, the existence of structural hierarchy and heterogeneity, and yet material properties beyond linear elasticity are neither universally known or even well-defined due to a staggering amount of material models. Our work focuses on the kinematic side of the inverse problem of material characterization, with particular focus on determining finite deformations of soft materials. In this seminar I will present our work in acquisition and use of full 3D displacement fields from a custom magnetic resonance imaging sequence in elastomer characterization. Past simple characterization based on a known constitutive model, this talk will showcase some next steps such as using mechanics principles for experimental design and optimization. In short, we want first to design the best experiment we can using an experimental sensitivity metric, and then generate one single high-resolution field for inverse calibration. Other topics of discussion will include effects of error and systematic noise.

Bio

Dr. Jon B. Estrada is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Jon received his BSc in Materials Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (’11) and his ScM and PhD, in Solid Mechanics from Brown University (’13,’17) before starting at the University of Michigan as a research fellow. He began as faculty at the University of Michigan in 2020 and was the recipient of a Haythornthwaite Research Initiation Award in 2021. Jon’s research interests lie in the experimental observation and assessment of soft and biological materials.
