Professor, Director, Medical ICT Center, Yokohama National University, Japan
Finnish Distinguished Professor, University of Oulu, Finland
CEO, University of Oulu Research Institute Japan – CWC-Nippon, Japan

Abstract: Medical healthcare must be the most important social services for citizens because population ageing may degrade social healthcare service due to exceeding expense for high cost and long-term treatment.  From a viewpoint of industry, it can create very profitable business. In fact, advanced medical healthcare using sophisticated information and communication technology (ICT), so-called medical ICT, can promote a new big business and improve medical healthcare services among hospitals, homes and people in remote areas by IoT. Ultimately, advanced ICT will carry out “Dependable Medicine,” so that ubiquitous medical healthcare can be guaranteed highly reliable, secure and safe, i.e. dependable ICT such as wireless body area network (BAN) for anyone, anytime and anywhere.

This talk will introduce a comprehensive scenario of dependable wireless BAN for advanced medical healthcare including research, education, development, standard, regulation, social services and business. Various technical requirements to carry out dependable medicine based on multilayer of advanced ICT and multidisciplinary subject between social and natural sciences “Regulatory Science” to guarantee dependability in social medical healthcare services. For sustainable service and business of dependable medical healthcare services, standardization of dependable BAN must be keen for a global market, so international standard activities of wireless BAN IEEE802.15.6 and its extendable IEEE802.15 IG-DEP of which the speaker has been chairing will be introduced.
