DESCRIPTION:Assistant Professor\n\nDepartment of Computer Science\n\nWorces
ter Plytechnic Institute\n\nManaging and Making Sense of Big Data From Urb
an Networks\n\nAbstract: The urban network infrastructure has undergone a
fast development and expansion over recent years\, which increasingly gene
rates an immense amount of big data\, such as human mobility data\, human
transaction data\, regional weather data\, and etc. These heterogeneous ur
ban network data bring new\nchallenges in data management\, and convey ric
h information about a city and can enable intelligent\nsolutions to solve
various urban challenges\, such as urban facility planning\, air pollution
\, etc. In this talk\, I\npresent my work on managing and analyzing these
urban network data that enable smart city operation\nsystems and improve p
eoples' life quality. Going beyond the existing fixed route model in publi
 c transits\nand point‐to‐point model in private transits\, the first w
ork introduces a hybrid hub‐&‐spoke transit system\nfor urban transpor
tation\, that requires less routes than private transits\, thus improves t
he efficiency of\nusing transportation resources and increase the occupati
on rate\; and it requires less stops/transfers than existing public transi
ts to save on trip time. In the second work\, by analyzing a large‐scale
electric taxi\ntrajectory data\, I investigate an emerging and challengin
g question to urban planners and electric utility companies\, namely\, how
to strategically deploy the charging stations and charging points in an u
rban area to minimize the average time to the nearest charging station\, a
nd the average waiting time for an available charging point.\n\n\nBiograph
y: Yanhua Li is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Computer Sci
ence and Data Science\nProgram at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). B
efore joining WPI\, Dr. Li worked as a Post‐Doctoral\nResearcher in the
Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Minnesota\
, Twin\nCities\, and worked as a researcher in HUAWEI Noah's Ark LAB at Ho
ng Kong. He obtained two PhD degrees\nin computer science and electrical e
ngineering from University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities in 2013\, and\nBeiji
ng University of Posts and Telecommunications in 2009. His broad research
interests are in smart cities\,\ndata‐driven cyber‐physical systems (C
PS)\, and urban computing. Dr. Li has held visiting positions in Bell Labs
in New Jersey\, Microsoft Research Asia\, and HUAWEI\nresearch labs of Am
erica. He is a senior member of IEEE and a member of ACM.
