DESCRIPTION:Take part in a discussion with Dr. Keller\, immediately followi
ng his lecture. Ask questions\, seek advice and enjoy some snacks. \n\nRe
search Talk: Recognition Technology: Lotfi’s look to the future from the
  late 1990s (3-4pm\, Rekhi 214)\n\nDr. James Keller\n\nCurators Professor\
, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department\, University of
MissouriLife Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Enginee
rs (IEEE) Abstract: In 1998\, Lotfi Zadeh\, the crea
tor of fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic\, coined the term Recognition Tech
nology\, saying that it refers to current or future systems that have the
potential to provide a “quantum jump in the capabilities of today’s re
cognition systems”. Recognition Technology will include systems that inc
orporate three advances: new sensors\, novel signal processing and soft co
mputing. That vision has come to pass. I will discuss these three aspects
of recognition technology through two quite different case studies that I
am involved in: landmine detection and eldercare technology. They are bot
h recognition systems. The former has a goal of detecting objects\, explos
ive hazards\, to help save lives while the latter focuses on recognizing h
uman activities to allow older adults to live independently with a higher
quality of life. While the sensors applied to these problems are dissimila
r\, they share many of the signal processing and pattern recognition appro
aches. This talk is my tribute to Professor Zadeh who passed away recently
  at the age of 96.
