Abstract

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multi-program, federally funded research and development center for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). LANL's priority roles are serving as a nuclear weapons design agency and a nuclear weapons production agency; addressing nuclear threats; and performing national security science, technology, and engineering. LANL’s Test Engineering organization serves the national mission of maintaining a strategic nuclear deterrent by providing high-quality, empirical evidence through the execution and assessment of weapons system and component testing. Shock and vibration environmental testing provides one key piece of evidence for evaluation and qualification of these systems and components in the service environments incurred during a lifetime in the stockpile. LANL’s Test Engineering group continuously pursues research and development to improve shock and vibration testing capabilities, processes, and analysis techniques to increase the fidelity of service environment recreations in laboratory testing settings. This talk will highlight recent R&D advancements in areas such as test planning methodologies, environmental specification development, multi-axis testing strategies, data analysis tools, and test assessment methods. These advancements are critical to the organization’s vision to be the preeminent resource for providing experimental evaluation in support of the national security mission.

Bio

Andy Morello has been a staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for over 10 years. He received his BS (2009) and MS (2011) in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University with a focus in experimental structural dynamics. At LANL, he has supported numerous weapon sustainment and modernization programs across various roles including Test Engineer, Team Leader, and Deputy Group Leader. He is currently the Group Leader for E-14, Test Engineering where he oversees approximately 60 staff members and experimental operations across six facilities supporting normal, abnormal and hostile environments testing for the Weapons Programs. In addition to his tenure at LANL, Andy spent approximately 15 months at Oshkosh Defense where he led development of survivability solutions for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV).
