Associate Professor, Visual and Performing Arts
Director of Bands
Michigan Technological University

Co-host

Huskies Pep Band students/musicians Matt Bettwy (mechanical engineering) and Laura Bufanda (theatre and entertainment technology).

Topic

Michigan Tech is not only home to some of the world’s top researchers, but to world-class musicians, as well. One of those is Prof. Mike Christianson. Most weekdays, he can be found teaching music or leading one of three bands at Michigan Tech. On the weekends, the classically-trained trombone player cooks up hot jazz in the Big Apple. In 2019 Prof. Christianson was nominated for a Grammy Award—for the second time—as a member of the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble. Band directing is a Christianson family tradition. “Our daughter Michelle represents the fifth consecutive generation in my family to become a band director, and our son Aaron, when at Michigan Tech, was a student director of Tech’s acclaimed Huskies Pep Band.” Michigan Tech offers three opportunities for a band experience: the Campus Concert Band, the Huskies Pep Band, and the Superior Wind Symphony. During Husky Bites we’ll get to hear all about the fantastic Michigan Tech music scene.
