Materials Science and Engineering Seminar

Greg Bouse

Abstract

Greg will use examples from his own personal experience and highlight what it takes to become invaluable to a company while achieving many personal goals and global travel. Important aspects of recruiting interviews, and how to select a good company will be discussed, as well as graduate school and aspects of professional societies. Greg will also disperse some practical advice for living and working. The talk will be fluid, and students are encouraged to ask any questions of importance to them.

Bio

Mr. Greg Bouse retired from the General Electric Co. as Principal Engineer - Casting Technology in 2015. He graduated from MTU in 1974 with a BS in Metallurgical Engineering and in 1976 from Carnegie-Mellon Univ. with a Masters of Engineering degree. At Tech, he was heavily involved with campus activities including being an RA, Keweenawan Editor and Lode Editor, and of course intramural sports. Greg started his career in Research & Development within General Electric Power Systems, also having worked at the TRW Aircraft Group, and Howmet Aerospace. He eventually wrote 20+ technical papers and has 3 patents, was Chair of the AIME/TMS High Temperature Alloys Committee and briefly as Chair of the ASM Int’l Casting Division. He participated with HR in Engineer Training at Howmet (hiring 26 college graduates) and has been to all 22 divisions of Howmet as part of a team to solve casting problems. At TRW he helped transition single crystal turbine blades to the Lycoming AGT1500 Engine used in the Abrams M1 Tank. He was a Technical Advisor at the Japan plant to improve their DS casting process. Back at GE, he has worked on increasing the efficiency of two gas turbine programs, pushing the firing temperatures to 3000F. He had superalloy, ductile iron, and low-alloy steel part responsibilities and helped source large castings (verifying specification requirements), primarily in China, Europe, and Brazil.
