Presenting Career Choices for a PhD Physicist Outside of Academia
Abstract:
In the presentation we outline the opportunities for a PhD physicist outside of academia, for example the opportunities in development of medical devices. In his talk Dr. Dinov will present examples of his industry and applied physics experiences. He will share with you his view of the blessings and the perils of working in the industry. A selected sample of interesting projects, which he encountered, will be included as well. The talk will give the young physicist a perspective of working in the industry and illustrate that their knowledge and skills apply to many exciting projects outside of academia.
Bio:
Dr. Dinov received his Master degree in Applied Physics from Sofia University in Bulgaria and his PhD degree in Applied Physics from Michigan Technological University.
After completing a postdoc at MTU in 1996, Dr. Dinov spent 20+ years in the industry working for defense, medical device and high tech companies. He worked in many startups as well as large corporations like ASML, Sony and Integraph. Some of the startups where he worked were acquired by other companies, such as Boston Scientific. Currently he is the Senior Firmware Engineer at Abbott laboratories in San Diego, CA.
