This will take place on Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 3:30pm-5:00pm in Fisher Hall 139.

KAELAN ANDERSON
Quatz Enchanced Photoacoustic Spectroscopy of Soot Absorptivity
The measurement of black carbon in the atmosphere is becoming increasingly important in determining its health and environmental effects. Quatz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy(QEPAS) is being researched as a method to measure, in situ, the absorption coefficient of black carbon. In this talk, I will present current efforts of using the QEPAS technique to measure soot in order to determine the current detection limit, and develop ways to reduce that limit.

SAM GROETSCH
Radial Basis Functions for Photonic Applications
Currently utilized methods in the field of photonics each come with their own benefits and drawbacks. The motivation for this research was to attempt to find a general method that could maximize the benefits enjoyed by current methods while minimizing their associated limitations. This approach can be realized using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) technique. The RBF technique also has several unique features that provide additional benefits to many modern problems in photonics. This talk will run through the basic idea of the technique and show its application to some test-bed problems in photonics.

JONATHON BERMAN
Cloud Identification Models for the Pierre Auger Observatory
Clouds attenuate UV light which interferes with the tracking and measuring of air showers over the Pierre Auger Observatory. An atmospheric database is therefore utilized to backcheck the legitimacy of air shower data throughout the year. The motivation for Dr. Fick, Andrew Puyleart, and myself is to utilize the GOES-16 satellite to make cloud identification models that will be used to update this database. Machine learning techniques are explored to take advantage of the extensive amount of data produced by GOES-16.

The Ian W. Shepherd Memorial Award is presented each year to the most outstanding Physics graduate or graduates. The most promising of seniors are presented with a check and have their names engraved on a plaque, which is displayed in the physics department. This year the Ian W. Shepherd Award will be presented by alumnus, Dan Cordell.
