Women in Physics presents this week's physics colloquium speaker, Clio Sleator from the US Naval Research Lab.
The seminar will be presented in person at 4 p.m. on Thursday (Dec. 7) in Fisher Hall 139.
Adventures in physics from New York to California, Antarctica, and the Naval Research Lab
Abstract:
In this talk, I will discuss my experience as a physicist in a variety of settings including university, national lab, and extended travel for research. I will begin by talking about my background and education, and how I got interested in high energy astrophysics instrumentation. I will recount the adventures I had when traveling to Antarctica and New Zealand for the launch of a balloon-borne telescope as part of my Ph.D. research. I will then talk about how I chose what to do after graduate school, how I ended up at the Naval Research Lab, and my experience there so far. Throughout this presentation, I will specifically reflect on my experience as a woman in each of these settings. I will end by bringing up some topics and questions about women in physics that I think about often and that I hope to discuss with the Michigan Tech Women in Physics group.
Bio:
Clio received her Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley in 2019 and is currently an Astrophysicist at the Naval Research Lab. Her research is focused on instrument development for X-ray and gamma ray astrophysics.
