Abstract: A variety of social and ecological changes currently underway will increasingly challenge nature conservation in the coming decades. These shifts will threaten the capacity of traditional institutions established to conserve natural resources. For example, shifting views about humanity’s relationship with nature combined with declining trust in governmental institutions are likely to frustrate resource management agencies. Overcoming these challenges will require more than minor adjustments to the status quo; it will require re-envisioning conservation for a new generation of conservationists, and equipping its institutions with the tools needed to solve 21st Century problems.
