Safe Routes to School- Houghton
Houghton Elementary and Middle Schools are partnering with MTU students taking Advanced GIS and Communities and Research classes on a Safe Routes to School project. The team has been working to map where students live, understand how they currently travel to school and why, and to document challenges and opportunities for using more active transportation options (walking & biking). The goal is to use this information to make decisions about what kinds of infrastructure and program improvements the schools and the City of Houghton can make to encourage more active transport. The information will be used in a grant application to fund improvements. Students will present findings to the Houghton Portage Township School Board at their December 16 meeting. This Brown Bag presentation will give students a chance to practice and to share their project with the Social Sciences department. Please come and give us feedback!
