Join us for the Social Sciences Brown Bag Speaker Series where Oscar Rodríguez Cavielles will present "A “perfect” marriage: Industrial heritage and tourism in Asturias (Spain):

After more than 150 years of mining and industrial history and once the economic cycle based on coal has ended, the Spanish region of Asturias has faced the challenge of taking over and managing -providing a new use- some of the most important heritage vestiges of that past. The European structural funds of aid for the reactivation of the mining districts, sometimes squandered, have nevertheless served for the improvement of the communication infrastructures in the region and for acting on elements of the industrial heritage in order to turn them into a tourist resource. In this way Asturias has begun to lead, together with Catalonia, a new type of tourism based on experiences around the mining-industrial heritage.

Through this paper Cavielles will intend to summarize the mining and industrial history of this region showing images of its main heritage elements, both those that continue in operation and those that are abandoned and, above all, focusing on the successful experiences of converting old mines and factories into visitable spaces.
