Social Sciences Brown Bag

This is a past event.

Friday, December 15, 2017, 12 pm– 1:30 pm

This is a past event.

Please join us for our final brown bag of the semester. We will hear from students in the grad IA class share presentations from their Keweenaw Bay Sands project.

Please note the extended time. Talks will last for one hour, followed by discussion. We understand some may need to leave at 1:00.

Abstract: The mine tailings in Keweenaw Bay have a complex history and set of environmental consequences. Industrial Archaeology and Environmental Policy students in Social Sciences have been studying various aspects of the Gay and Mass Mills and their sand dispersal throughout the bay. The presentations today are from those students working at Gay. They focus on the history of the mill and the community, and how residents and others in the Keweenaw use the sands and view the historic aspects of the ruins at Gay.

The four talks are:

  • Tyler Allen:  Milling Operations at the Gay Mills:  Copper and Tailings
  • Cooper Sheldon:  "Place"ing Value:  Place Value and Ruination at the Remains of the Mohawk, and Wolverine Stamp Mill
  • Jamie Radson: Story-Based Heritage: Toward and Interpretive Plan for Gay, MI
  • Brendan Doucet: The Contemporary use of Stamp Sands: Recreation, commercialization, and preservation of an industrial landscape.
