Dr. Tim Scarlett, Associate Professor of Archaeology in MTU Social Sciences presents:
Survey at Chicago’s Haymarket Martyr’s Monument in Forest Home Cemetery: Archaeology and Labor History
In August 2016, Michigan Technological University researchers assisted a collaborative team surveying within the Forest Home Cemetery, in Forest Park, Illinois. The Illinois Labor History Society requested assistance in mapping subsurface deposits around the 1893 Haymarket Martyrs’ Monument, the burial site of the seven of those wrongly accused of the bombing, along with dozens of other labor leaders, agitators, socialists, anarchists, and communists. The ILHS owns and curates the monument and graves and requested help to map and identify subsurface features surrounding the monument. Using Ground Penetrating Radar and basic metal detectors, the team mapped a portion of the cemetery grounds adjacent to the monument.
