Title: Easy Socioeconomic Data & Mapping Tool for Teaching & Research: Introducing Social Explorer
Abstract: Michigan Tech now subscribes to Social Explorer (https://www.socialexplorer.com/). This is a super easy interactive tool for accessing and mapping detailed socioeconomic data at multiple geographic scales. Its a great way to bring data into classroom activities. Its also an easy way to access background/contextual information for research projects or to explore patterns and make hypotheses. Anyone can use this and get up to speed quickly. No GIS skills required. Richelle Winkler will introduce the tool and its features, cover some of the things that users should keep in mind (best practices), and show some examples for how she is using it for teaching and research.
