Physics Colloquium

Payel Kar joins us to present some of the discoveries made while studying data from VERITAS, Fermi-LAT, and Swift-XRT.  VERITAS is a ground-based gamma-ray observatory looking at a multitude of sources such as distant blazars, supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, and the supermassive black hole in the center of our own Milk Way.

She will also provide an overview of how gamma-ray sources are observed with VERITAS using the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique (IACT), and exceptional science that can be done in collaboration with the HAWC.  Also, the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory will also be presented.

Kar has completed her Undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Calcutta and Masters in Physics from Christ Univerisity, both in India.  She worked on India's first astronomy satellite, AstroSat, for her masters project.  She has a second Masters in Physics from the University of Utah and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. there.  Kar works in gamma-ray/X-ray astronomy and her research focuses on studying and searching for TeV Binaries.
