Title: Adaptive Mesh Methods for Partial Differential Equations
Abstract: Many scientific and engineering applications are described by differential equations involving several variables, called partial differential equations (PDEs). When these equations are too complicated to solve by hand, we use computers to find approximate solutions. A common approach is to approximate the solution at a set of points, known as a computational mesh, spread throughout the region.
While a fine mesh can be used to provide a high-resolution approximation in the region, using a fine mesh can be computationally expensive. Instead of using a fine mesh everywhere in the region, adaptive mesh methods place more grid points where they are needed and fewer points where the solution changes slowly.
In this talk, we will introduce adaptive moving mesh methods for solving nonlinear PDEs. We will explain the basic idea behind these methods and use several numerical examples to show how they can improve accuracy while reducing computational cost.
