Abstract
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, with coronary artery disease being the most prevalent form of heart disease. Balloon angioplasty and stent placement is a common treatment with 600,000 stents being placed in 2020. However, each generation of these medical devices has been met with unexpected bioincompatibilities, such as high restenosis with bare metal stents and late-stage thrombosis with drug eluting stents. The development of vascular materials has traditionally proceeded with the use of young and healthy animals. However, older and diseased humans are most frequently the recipients of these devices. To investigate the role of age and atherogenic backgrounds on material biocompatibility, vascular materials were implanted into atherogenic mice and older rats. In both atherogenic and older environments, significant differences were observed in the biological responses that could strongly impact the development of vascular materials.
