Topic

A word spoken by Indigenous Austrialians, Kanyini, means responsibility and unconditional love for all of creation, including the land. Working via Zoom last spring, first-year engineering student teams at Michigan Tech designed innovative structures for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Cape York, Australia:  shelters; keeping places for artifacts; and mobile amenities for campsites. Prof. Jarvie-Eggart will tell us all about this unique design challenge, conducted in partnership with Engineers Without Borders Australia. The Stanford d. School's Design Thinking model helped guide the process—which involved empathy, prototyping and feedback. The best part, she says: seeing how students became community-minded and aware of the cultural context of their designs as they served clients located halfway across the globe. Joining in will be Michigan Tech environmental engineering alum Amanda Singer. While at Tech she spent four years working as an undergraduate teaching assistant, aka “LEAP Leader,” and stayed on to earn her Master’s with Prof. Jarvie-Eggart as one of her advisors. Together during Husky Bites they'll show some of the cool designs that came out of the challenge, and share how new engineers get comfortable with the ambiguity inherent to problem-based learning (when there is no answer in the back of the book). Amanda is now earning a PhD in engineering education at Ohio State.
