Who we are: The Michigan Tech Sailing Team is a coed, student-run, club sailing team that allows undergraduate students of all sailing abilities to compete at regattas around the Midwest. Who can join: Any undergraduate student interested in sailing can join, from experienced racers to complete newcomers. Grad students and professors can also join but cannot race per MCSA rules. See this page for more information. What we sail: The majority of regattas are held in Collegiate 420s. Our fleet of boats consists of six Collegiate 420s and a 470. Where we practice: We practice on the Portage Canal and launch our boats between the Super 8 and the Houghton Waterfront Pavilion. Where we race: We travel to regattas throughout the Midwest to compete against other collegiate sailing teams. In the past, we have traveled to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northwestern, Western Michigan, Great Lakes Maritime Academy, and more. Check our Events page for our full regatta schedule. When we practice: The fall season begins with the start of the school year and ends in October. Our club sails Monday, Wednesday, Friday 6pm-8pm, weather permitting. Team members interested in racing are expected to commit to weekly race practices. There is no weekly commitment for those who wish to sail for pleasure. When we compete: Regattas are held on the weekends at other Universities throughout the midwest. We typically send 4-5 sailors who travel to the regatta site Friday afternoon and return Sunday night. Why you should join: The MTU Sailing Club is a great way to make new friends at Tech, make contacts with other sailors from throughout the midwest, improve your sailing ability, and have fun all the while. Who to contact: If you’re interested in joining the club or would just like some more information, visit our website at sailing.students.mtu.edu or join our discord https://discord.gg/zWTgNqeBGx. Non Students The MTU Sailing Club is open to all undergraduate students, grad students, and professors of all skill levels, including those who have never sailed before. As a club, our goal is to promote the sport of sailing, provide for the enjoyment of our members, and provide teaching to improve the skills of all club members. If you’ve been sailing for years and are just looking to get out on the water or have never been on a boat and want to learn, we can provide you with lessons, coaching, and opportunities to get out on the water. If you’re interested in learning how to sail or joining the club, please visit our website at sailing.students.mtu.edu.
